The New York State Office of General Services is responsible for the disposal for all surplus personal property of the State of New York. In a typical year it disposes of over 50,000 items obtained from agencies throughout the state.
These items include: cars, trucks, highway maintenance equipment, computers, office furniture, medical equipment, cameras, restaurant equipment, clothing, electrical, plumbing, tools, generators, compressors and scrap metal. Some of the more unique items received for disposal are: airplanes, helicopters, a lobster boat, 1950's fire trucks, and granite cobblestones recently removed from roads and pathways.

Any item owned by the State which is not classified as real estate and is no longer useful to the State. The Office of General Services administers the disposal of this State property. This property is referred to as Surplus Personal Property.
